Daimōns
Images: Charcoal & watercolour on A4 cartridge paper, AD Kerton, 2023.
‘When we say the daimon is “autonomous,” we mean that it is not under the control of the ego consciousness. It is superior to our ordinary consciousness, and can possess us without our conscious awareness. Its expression cannot be consciously willed, and the more our unconscious is split off from consciousness, the larger and more powerful the daimon is.’ - Jungian Center Website
These works on paper emerged following somatic meditations - also known as somatisations. They were each realised in one sitting, with as little conscious interference on my part as possible.
Drawing in charcoal allows for a spontaneous rendering of whatever form emerges in the post-somatic moment. These emergent forms are taken as they are and never ‘corrected’ or ‘improved’. Colouring with watercolour solidifies the emergent form.
This is a purposefully intuitive process that seeks to streamline the externalisation of internal expressions and betray previously unconscious psycho-physical content.
